We love a multi day hike but carrying around a crap tonne of gear for days on end isn’t everyone’s idea of fun. We always struggle getting a booking on the Milford track (it sells out fast) so having this experience for those who miss out is incredible. In less than a 10-minute boat ride, you have access to an area that normally takes three days to hike to. It was a super easy walk. The scenes!!! Enjoy the bush walk through rimu and beech trees. Witness the mountains towering above as you get gaps in the bush. The birds! The sound the sight, all of it. Again another super short walk from the carpark, mostly downhill on the way to the falls, but keep in mind you'll be uphill most of the way back and on a wet day it can be very slippery and steep. We’ve always found this place to be extremely quiet no matter the time of year. The Mclean Falls is most definitely the biggest and most impressive of the waterfalls in the Catlins. The walk in is another pretty easy stroll that should only take about 20 minutes. Majority of the track is flat with a steep bit at the end. There are multiple spots along the track to stop at and enjoy little falls along the stream. Unlike most of the other falls in the Catlins, these ones aren't overly sheltered therefore letting in loads of sun. If you are wanting to photograph and shoot long exposures, maybe make this your first stop early in the morning or your last stop later in the afternoon. Unless you have filters in which case go whenever you please. If you're brave and capable you can climb up the side of the waterfall to access the top pool. I’ve started with the Milford Sound Lodge Campground as this is the closest camp to the foreshore. It is super pricey ($60 PP) and you do need to book in advance but for the convenience of being so close to the foreshore it’s totally worth it. It’s a great spot to stay if you have an early morning cruise or you want to photograph the foreshore at sunrise or sunset. We stayed here the night before we had the one day Milford Track Experience and it was absolutely perfect for that purpose. We also enjoyed a couple of beers in the lodge after the hike as well as a shower….they also have wifi and with no reception past Te Anau Downs at all this was a lifesaver when we still had work to be done. With plenty of little bush camps to choose from, campsites that have views of the lake Te Anau and big open camps to accommodate multiple rigs this camp really has all the options for you! The camp has one long drop and zero other facilities (the same as all the DOC camps). We have yet to stay in these two although we have enjoyed picnic lunches at the locations and they look just as good as the camps we have stayed at. Deer Flat is great for being tucked away in the bush yet you’re still rewarded with mountain views. There is a beautiful waterhole along the river here too. One of the most scenic spots and biggest camp sites. The perfect camp if you’re travelling in a group and probably the best options of sites if you’re staying in a tent (sooooo much flat space). We love this camp for the views of the waterfalls. Double check before you go how much it is as it’s always changing and they have only allowed this since the pandemic. The last time we were there it was $20 for 3 hours and an extra $50 to stay between 10pm and 6am. You will want to stop and pull over multiple times. About 10 minutes into the road, on your right hand side there will be a scenic lookout point known as Peter's Lookout. It's the only signposted car park along the road. This spot is an incredible viewpoint to overlook Lake Pukaki and the Southern Alps. It's one of our favourite places to watch the sunrise and with a bend in the road leading perfectly towards the mountains, it's every photographers dream. Another pull off spot along the road we love is just after the Dead Horse Stream bridge. It's a small gravel stop on the side of the road and is perfect for those iconic tourist snaps. Lake Poaka, just out of Twizel is also another beautiful place to park up for a night. Honestly, the Mackenzie country is very generous with the amount of freedom camping spots around, so you'll have no trouble finding somewhere awesome to stay.
